The first AIFF Regional Academy in collaboration with FIFA was formally opened at the Father Agnel School premises in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday (May 1). Twenty U-15 boys including two goalkeepers will be a part of the Residential Academy at the School premises. Former India International Aqeel Ansari will be the Assistant Coach at the Academy and Ms. Sonika Sudan has been appointed as the Physiotherapist while Shailesh Karkera will be the Academy Manager.
Scott O’Donell, Technical Director, AIFF Regional and Elite Academies conducted the first training session,which was more of a“ fun session, but after the boys have settled down, the training will be more intensive .” Colin Toal , Head Coach Youth Development and National Team Coach Savio Medeira were also part of the first training session. Father Saturnino Almeida, Managing Director of Father Agnel Schools, who was instrumental in the process of setting up of the Academy, stated that the Academy is very important in shaping the future of Indian Football.
The entire focus of the Academy is to create World Class Players, according to AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das, and after the first Academy, many more will be opened in other cities.
