The Durand Cup which is Asia’s oldest and the world’s third oldest football tournament got a new lease of life with Anglian Holdings deciding to sponsor the 125th edition of the Cup barely a week after it lost its chief sponsor(Micromax Mobile).
Anglian Holdings has joined hands with the Indian Defence Forces to aid one of the most prestigious and historical annual sporting events in India.
Anglian Holdings, which is owned by Indian entrepreneur Uday Narang and also holds 25 per cent stake at I-League side Shillong Lajong FC, will be sponsoring the tournament after Micromax pulled out of the event at the last minute.
” It was an emotional decision(to support the tournament),” said Anglian Holdings chief strategic officer Sandeep Narang, when speaking to PTI.
Uday Narang, Chairman, Anglian Holdings said, “At Anglian, we want to make a definite and positive contribution towards the improvement of Indian football, and following our twin investments in Shillong Lajong FC and FC Vestsjælland, we see this association with the Durand Cup as another step in that direction. We are extremely proud to partner a prestigious and historically significant tournament like the Durand Cup, and are thankful to the Indian Defence Forces for giving us the opportunity.”
The main round of the tournament will begin from August 23 at the Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi with the Final scheduled for September 1st.
