Arsenal continued their wonderful away form, when they made their intentions clear for Champions League qualification with a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton at the Molineux Stadium on Wednesday ,and keeping a firm grip on the 3rd spot, with a 5 point gap from Tottenham.
Playing in front of a hostile crowd, which got even boisterous after the 9th minute sending off of defender Sebastien Bassong, Arsenal made short work of their bottom placed rivals. It was captain Robin Van Persie who made a delightful pass to a racing Theo Walcott, and Bassong could all but bring down the England winger ,after clipping him from behind. Referee Neil Swarbrick was quick to point to the spot and gave the marching orders to Bassong. Van Persie then scored his first goal in 4 games, with a cheeky spotkick, to give the Gunners the early lead. A couple minutes later, it was the Walcott-Persie combination again, this time Walcott dispatching the ball into the back of the net ,for his 9th League goal, after a one-two with his captain.
After that the game was shut and sealed, with Arsenal having most of possession. Wolves did had a wonderful chance to make something out of the game, when Kevin Doyle’s header seemed destined for the far corner ,but an extraordinary save by Wojciech Szczesny denied the Irish striker, who could not quite believed his shot did not go in.
Yossi Benayoun put the game beyond doubt when he rifled in from outside the box, from an Alex Song pass ,in the 69th minute. Arsenal now have picked up 9 wins from 10 games, and their 4th clean sheet from 5 games, and for now, have seemed to cement their claim for 3rd place.
