D. Venkatesh, a 23-year-old footballer died on Wednesday after collapsing on the ground during an A League match in Bangalore and there was no medical facility to give him immediate assistance.
He was a first division footballer for a local club, Bangalore Mars.
Featuring in the side’s encounter with South Western Railway at the Bangalore Football Stadium, Venkatesh, who came on as a substitute and played in the final stages of the game, collapsed within minutes of his appearance.
His teammates hired an autorickshaw and took him to the nearby Hosmat hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Venkatesh’s father said that his son was doing absolutely fine before he left his house in the morning. He also added that his son has never suffered from any serious illness.
The crowd however, were furious on hearing the news of the player’s death. The angry crowd turned violent and started throwing chairs and other projectiles onto the ground.
It may also be mentioned that this is not the first time that a footballer had died while playing in the city. Brazilian striker for Dempo Sports Club Cristiano Sebastião de Lima Júnior , collapsed after scoring the second goal at the 26th Federation Cup Football Tournament at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. on December 5,2004. He collided with Mohun Began goalkeeper Subrata Paul before collapsing.
All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel said that serious action will be taken against those found guilty of negligence after a local football player died on the pitch during a game due to lack of medical attention in Bangalore.
