Blackburn Rovers became the second team to be relegated after Wolverhampton in this season of the Barclay’s Premier League, after losing 0-1 at home to “giant killers” Wigan Athletic on Monday. The Lactics confirmed their Premiership survival with a late Antolin Alcaraz header, who towered over a number of players to head home from a corner, in the 87th minute.
It was the visitors who had the most number of chances, although Steve Kean’s team would consider themselves unlucky to have not been awarded a penalty, for a foul on Junior Hoilett in the second half, when referee Clattenburg waved away the hosts’ frantic appeals.
Blackburn, who knew that only a win can save them from relegation, produced an error-strewn performance, much like the visitors, who failed to capitalise on many near chances.
It seem that neither team would break the deadlock in the battle for Premiership survival. However, late in the game ,in the 87th minute, Wigan were awarded a corner and Alcaraz out jumped the Wigan defenders at the back post to headed home the winner for the Lactics, and condemning Steve Kean’s Rovers to a season in the Npower Championship. While Wigan, with this win have leapfrogged to 15th place, with 40 points in their kitty.
