Chelsea overcame a late Liverpool resurgence to lift a third FA Cup in four years, winning 2-1 at The Wembley Stadium on Saturday. The Blues took an early lead, when Ramires scored from a perfect Juan Mata early pass in the 10th minute, shooting past Claudio Reina at the near post. Liverpool almost got the perfect reply when Craig Bellamy unleashed a right footer, but his shot was blocked by Ivanovic. It was a see-saw battle throughout the first half ,with both sides looking dangerous on the counter attack, more so Chelsea.
The second half saw an early Chelsea corner straightway, was comfortably dealt with by the Liverpool backline. Minutes later though,in the 52nd minute Frank Lampard made a sublime pass to Didier Drogba, and the Ivorian striker put the ball in through Martin Skrtel’s legs and past Reina for a record fourth FA Cup Final goal.Kenny Daglish almost immediately made a quick change, replacing the off colour Spearing with Andy Carroll. The tall English forward made an immediate impact, reducing Chelsea’s lead to one goal. Carroll showed some superb skills from a Jose Enrique pass, rounded John Terry and blasted past Petr Cech with a fearsome left footer, in the 64th minute .Bouyed by the goal ,Liverpool rallied hard to find the all important equaliser, and in the 82nd minute Carroll seemed to have sent the game into extra time with a thumping header at the far post .The Liverpool players and fans’ elation, though were short lived as the referee ruled out the goal, deeming that it had not cross the line.
It was all Liverpool in the final minutes of the match, but Chelsea managed to hung on, for their first Cup title of the season ,and all eyes will now be on the Blues’ Champions League final against Bayern Munich on May 19th.
