North-Easterners are sports lovers ! The biggest game for them is FOOTBALL. Can you imagine our hearts opening up when we heard we were having our own Football Club “LAJONG”, which literally translates to “OUR OWN”. The name immediately instilled a sense of belonging to each and everyone of us. Their motto “One team, One Passion, One colour” embedded in our hearts and we thronged to Polo Ground, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the 1st game against Air India, spectators doning the colour RED. The entire stadium was packed to the brim, even the friendly neighourhood rooftops were not spared. The supporters were electrifying, waving the Lajong flags with the constant beating of the tribal drums and the jubilating chanting of “Hooi kiew”.
They went and played in Pune where the same passion and support was eminent. Lajong flags waved everywhere. With a good amount of student community from Shillong the support was inevitable.
Surprisingly as we watched the gamed aired when they went to play in Barasat against East Bengal, another very big football fan state, our Lajong fans with their flags flying throughout the stadium was amazing. It only brought smiles to all of us at home as we watched the game on TV. Who can divide us, who can keep us apart? They are our boys out there – they are LAJONG.
We won some, we lost some, but our heads stay high, we love our team and our continuous support will remain with them always.
Another amazing factor was that, despite the tremendous crowd not a single untoward incident took place. The games were very professionally handled. The Lajong Management and MFA are doing a magnificent job
