Italy was held to a 1-1 draw by Croatia in Group C at Euro 2012 on Thursday.
Andrea Pirlo gave the Italians the lead with a curving free kick in the 39th minute. But Mario Mandzukic equalised for Croatia in the 72nd minute with his third goal of the tournament, lashing the ball into the net from Ivan Strinic’s cross.
In the first half, Italy had many chances from Mario Balotelli, Claudio Marchisio and Antonio Cassano but failed to convert any of the goal scoring opportunities and lacked finishing quality. Balotelli, in particular, missed one opportunity after another.
In the final round of group matches on Monday, Italy faces Ireland and Croatia meets world champion Spain.
With four points from two games, Croatia has a strong chance of reaching the quarterfinals, while Italy must beat Ireland on Monday to avoid an early exit.
Defending Champions Spain beat Ireland 4-0 in the other group match on Thursday.
In the 4th minute, Torres smashed the ball past keeper Shay Given and David Silva scored the second for Spain by calmly placing the ball wide of a cluster of defenders in the 49th minute. Torres again struck his third which was his second goal of the match, and Fabregas scored the fourth in the 83rd after coming off the bench.
Spain is level on points with Croatia and Ireland on the other hand has been eliminated.
