Ireland’s Euro 2012 campaign began with a shocking 3-1defeat by Croatia in Poznan on Sunday.
With this win, Croatia is at the top of the table in Euro 2012’s Group C.
The Croatian side, were off to a great start, with an early goal by Mario Mandzukic in the 3’ with a header from Darijo Srna’s deflected ball, which was the fastest goal scored in the tournament so far. In the 19’, Sean St Ledger found the equaliser midway through the first half.
In the 43’, Nikica Jelavic doubled the lead just before half time but the Everton striker appeared in an offside position before scoring the second goal for his side. There were loud protests from the Ireland squad but the Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers and his officials were confident that the striker was not off side.
In the second half, Mandzukic scored in the 48’ with a header from Ivan Perisic’s cross that ricocheted in off the post and Given’s head.
Ireland, which returned to a major tournament for the first time since the 2002 World Cup, will need a win over Spain and Italy to reach the quarter-finals.
