In what was an engrossing 5th Round encounter between last season’s Champions, Dempo SC and I-League dark horses, Shillong Lajong FC , which was played at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa, the home team saw off the North East side by 4 goals to 1.
Shillong Lajong FC showed quite a lot of grit to hold the defending champions till the 46th minute of the game, when Ryuji Sueoka scored off a header in the closing moments of the first half.
Clifford Miranda then doubled the hosts lead with a 50th minute goal. Shillong Lajong ,who truly held their own against the might of Dempo finally pulled back one in the 73rd minute through a Jibon Singh volley to make it 2-1.That brought the game to life as the North East side started to make in roads to the Goan side defence. However,a bad refereeing decision cost Shillong Lajong to concede another goal to hand Dempo the 2 goal cushion ,when the referee awarded a penalty kick to the hosts for a “handball” inside the box, much to the surprise of the Lajong players and the home crowd.Ryuji then converted from the spot to double his tally of the match. The Goans added another with a stoppage time goal from Anthony Perreira to seal the match 4-1 and the full three points for Dempo SC.
