Dempo have been crowed the champions of the I-League 2011-12 season after a goalless draw to East Bengal in a thrilling encounter at the Nehru stadium, Fatorda on Friday, which assured them the coveted title of I-League Champions. This is the 5th title of the Club, having won the league in 2004,2005,2008 and more recently 2010.
With this result, Dempo SC moved to 54 points from 25 matches, which will guarantee them pole position, until the end of the league. The closest title challengers, Pune FC have 46 points from the same number of matches, while Kingfisher East Bengal, still have two more matches left and have moved to 45 points from 24 matches.
It was a must win match for East Bengal and they did create many chances but none of the strikers were able to convert.
Throughout the match, Dempo were content to allow their opponents to grab a fair chunk of possession, and thwarting any attempt on goal. For Dempo, a draw would be good enough to secure them the title, and that seemed to be their gameplan. The Goan’s defence was unbreakable and East Bengal were left ruing their misfortunes, when they were denied a certain penalty, when Tolgay Ozbey was brought down in the box. Dempo held on to their nerves and went on to win the I-League crown for a record of five times after seeing off a spirited East Bengal outfit, who will now be aiming at 2nd spot.
