England central defender Gary Cahill has been ruled out of Euro 2012 after a scan showed that he had broken his jaw in two places in the final warm-up match against Belgium. Cahill was injured just 17 minutes into Saturday’s friendly at Wembley when he was shoved in the back and sent clattering into his own goalkeeper Joe Hart by Belgium striker Dries Mertens.
The Football Association said that Cahill has been withdrawn from the squad and will not be seen playing in Poland and Ukraine for Euro2012 which will kick off on Saturday.
Liverpool defender Martin Kelly was called on Sunday to join the squad as a replacement, with Hodgson having already omitted veteran Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand from his original squad.
Cahill’s Chelsea team mate John Terry has been given the all-clear after checks on his hamstring. The FA said that the defender was scanned and given the all clear checks, but he will be re-assessed on Tuesday when the team regroup.
