Substitute Silvestre Varela striked the winning goal in the 87th-minute to give Portugal a 3-2 win over Denmark in a thrilling Euro 2012 Group B encounter on Wednesday.Real Madrid defender Pepe opened the account for Portugal with a header from Joao Moutinho’s corner in the 24th minute.
Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Helder Postiga doubled the lead in the 36th minute from Nani’s cross.
The Danes managed to pull one back just before half time through Nicklas Bendtner with a powerful header.
Ronaldo, who scored 60 goals for Real Madrid last season, missed many goal scoring opportunities, more notably in the 78th minute,when he went face-to-face with Andersen but his shot wide of the goal.
Towards the end, the Danes found the much needed equaliser, when Bendtner found the back of the net in the 80th minute,through another searing header,doubling his tally in the match.
Portugal who were in a must win situation, revived their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals when substitute Silvestre Varela scored the winner three minutes from the end, spinning on the ball and shooting from short range. It was Varela’s first international goal in four appearances.
Ronaldo who was the team’s top scorer in qualifying for the tournament, failed to convert and misfired several shots.
