Defending champions, Spain will take on France in the quarter-final match tonight.
Spain has many players who are currently walking a suspension tightrope, with Alvaro Arbeloa, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Javi Martinez all one booking away from missing a semi-final clash with Portugal if they advance.
The French side also looks doubtful as Samir Nasri and Franck Ribery, both missed the training session on Wednesday, but are expected to feature in tonight’s match, while Yohan Cabaye may be excluded after sitting out the last group game with a thigh problem.
Striker Karim Benzema, who failed to find the net in France’s three group matches, despite setting up several goals for his side in their previous matches, will likely regain his scoring touch against World Champions Spain on Saturday.
Benzema and Franck Ribery, however have a good understanding on the left side of the pitch, but both players have struggled to link up with the enigmatic and occasionally over-elaborate Samir Nasri. With only two of their attacking elements in full working order, it is perhaps no surprise that France have looked short of fire-power.
The match, however, promises to be a closely-fought encounter in Donetsk and the winner will face Portugal in the semi-finals.
