Petr Jiracek scored a second-half winner to give Czech Republic a 1-0 victory over Poland, advancing to the Euro 2012 quarterfinals while the co-hosts crashed out.
In the 72d minute, Jiracek collected a pass from Milan Baros in the box, cut right past Poland’s Marcin Wasilewski, and slotted the ball inside the far post.
Poland which needed a win to advance to the quarterfinals, brought on two attacking players in the last 30 minutes in search of a goal, but struggled to create any serious threats.
With this win, the Czechs finished at the top of group A with six points and will now play the runners-up in Group B.
In the other group A match, Greece stunned Russia 1-0 in Warsaw on Saturday and advanced to the Euro 2012 quarter-finals.
Greece took the lead just before halftime when veteran captain Giorgos Karagounis sent a low shot under Russian goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev in the final touch of the first half.
The Russians who became one of the tournament favorites with their 4-1 win over the Czech Republic in their opening match, came close several times in the first half but failed to convert.
In the second half, Russia forward Alan Dzagoyev came close in the 84th minute with a glancing header off a cross from Andrei Arshavin, but the ball drifted just wide.
Group A former last place Greece has advanced to the next round of the Euro 2012 while Russia is eliminated from Euro 2012.
