India beat Syria,2-1 in the opening game of the Nehru Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on Wednesday.
Chettri’s header in added time of the first half gave India the crucial lead. The goal came when Clifford Miranda’s cross from the left, was headed into the far corner by the Indian skipper, Sunil Chhetri.
In the second half, Dempo winger Perriera, who substituted Sanju Pradhan, curled the ball from outside the box and doubled the lead in the 84th minute.
But the Indian defence looked very shaky, regularly being caught out by long balls and in the 90th minute, Ouday Abduljaffal’s free-kick saw Alaa Alshbbli head the ball home from six yards out, and India’s custodian Subrata Paul had no chance to save. But the goal came too late for the Syrian side, as India grabbed all the three points and Sunil Chettri was declared as the man of the match.
