Shillong Lajong U-19 striker, Tepongmeren Kichi who will be donning Kohima Komets colours in the ongoing Nagaland Premier League, speaks exclusively on his footballing career, his favourite players and his experience so far with SLFC.
He is from Mokokchung, Nagaland and has been playing football since he was only 7 years old. He had the passion for football right from his early days and football has always been an integral part of his life.
In 2007 Kichi’s footballing career took off with OCYA FC and played his first tournament in the MDFA.
He joined SLFC in January 2011 and has been in Shillong for the past 1 year. During the North East Tour 2010 two boys got selected and he was one of them. He is the first footballer from Nagaland to be signed with Shillong Lajong Football Club.
He is presently doing his class 12 from Goodwill College, Shillong.
The following are excerpts from the promising striker’s recent interview with Shillong Lajong Football Club ’s Media Manager.
Q:How has your experience with the Club been so far? Any thoughts or comments that you have on Lajong FC?
Meren: From all the football clubs in the North East, SLFC has better training facilities. The Coaching staff are very knowledgeable and very helpful. The training provided by Lajong has shaped me into a matured footballer. Also, the academy is excellent.
Q:How do you find Shillong?
Meren: Shillong is a very beautiful place and I feel at home.The people here are very warm and friendly. I also find the weather quite suitable, as it is similar to Nagaland.
Q: Your comments on the current football scene in Nagaland:
Meren: Football is very popular in Nagaland but there is no facility. It is important for every footballer to be properly trained and I am very lucky that I got picked by Shillong Lajong FC.
Q: Your favourite Lajong player:
Q:Apart from football, what do you do in your free time?
Meren: I like listening to music and also like surfing the internet.
Q: Who is your favourite international football star?
Meren: My favourite footballer without a doubt has to be Messi and I am very proud of his recent achievement against Bayer Leverkusen (scoring a record of 5 goals in Champions League history).
Q: Before we wrap up the interview, I would like to ask you one last question. What is your message to the SLFC management?
Meren: I would like to thank the coaching staff for helping and guiding me through out. They are immensely nice and very understanding. They have shaped me in becoming a good footballer for which I am extremely grateful.
