Salomon Kalou’s winning goal took Chelsea to victory by defeating Benfica,1-0 in Lisbon.
Kalou converted Fernando Torres’s cross in the 75th minute and scored the only goal of the match in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg.
The Ivory Coast footballer had just returned from the Africa Cup of Nations in February, has played only three matches for Chelsea. His contract will expire at the end of the season and has yet to renew it.
Benfica dominated most of the match proceedings but could not convert most of the chances that came their way.
Chelsea now takes a one goal advantage, going to next week’s second leg at the Bridge.
