Bollywood superstar and Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) has shown keen interest on investing in Indian football with a 50 percent stake in Dempo SC, the 5-time I-league champion and the most successful football club in India.
SRK will bid for Dempo SC shares for around Rs 30 crore. He will be bidding for the Goan Club, through Red Chillies just like his IPL franchisee Kolkata Knight Riders.
After his team’s success in IPL season 5, SRK is looking forward to invest in football which would be a game changer for the sport in the country. The deal which is to be finalised in two weeks, the owner of Dempo SC, Shrinivas Dempo, has confirmed that he has met the star on several occasions and said that,” The talks between us has been very positive. Although 50 per cent stake in the club would be given away, the name shall be retained,” said Dempo.
Baichung Bhutia, however, said that many potential investors who were not so sure about the future would get confidence if Khan bought a stake in Dempo. “Personally speaking, I’ve been fighting, discussing a lot to get some investors into my team United Sikkim. So SRK coming to football will not only help Dempo but also others.
The Secretary and head coach of the club, Armando Colaco, said that, the main reason behind the talks with SRK is to get crowds to football games. “He’s a great crowd puller. If he comes to the matches, so will people. That’s the main reason we want him,”.
Dempo SC which won the Indian football league for a record of 5 times including this year’s I-League 2011-12 season, is regarded as one of the most powerful and dominant football clubs in India.
