I-League debutants Shillong Lajong registered an emphatic 4-1 victory over Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Saturday evening to move out of the bottom two.
Goals from Seikhohao Tuboi and Kelechi Okoye gave Lajong a two goal lead in the first half but Surkumar Singh pulled one back for the hosts before the break. Injury time goals from Niwan-o- Gatpoh and Anil Gurung sealed the win for the north eastern club.
With home advantage on their side it was Mohun Bagan who started the game strongly and should have taken the lead after six minutes when some fine interplay between Barreto and Chidi presented winger Snehashish Chakrborty the chance to score from close range but the former Chirag player still failed to hit the target.
The hosts continued to dominate possession but were punished for that missed opportunity as Tuboi gave Lajong a shock lead after receiving a pass from Daniel Bedemi.
Bagan further raised the tempo of their game after going behind but continued to be wasteful in front of goal with Chidi being the next to miss another decent chance.
In the 20th minute it got better for the I-League debutants when Nigerian Kelechi Okoye capitalized on a poor back pass from Sheik Azim to slot the ball past Sangram Mukherjee.
The two goal lead gave Lajong a lot of self belief while Mohun Bagan despite being the more experienced side started to panic.
Seven minutes before the break, the Kolkata giants did pull one back through Indian international Surkumar Singh who found the back of the net from a Snehashish Chakraborty corner.
Bagan ended the half strongly and had half chances to draw level but the heroics of goalkeeper Mawia made sure that Lajong went into the break with their lead in tact.
The second half started the way the first ended with the home side dominating the play but failing to score because of some good goalkeeping by Mawia.
Lajong on the other end were soaking up all the pressure and were playing on the break but were struggling to create openings.
The highly rated duo of Barreto and Chidi who have 20 goals between them this season were guilty of missing some good chances and it was looking like that it wasn’t going to be Bagan’s day.
The green and maroon brigade continued to apply pressure but it was Lajong who scored twice in injury time to ensure a big away win.
First Niwan-o- Gatpoh scored a brilliant solo goal after receiving the ball from Daniel Bedemi.
A minute later Nepalese international Anil Gurung bagged the fourth to complete the scoring.
Mohun Bagan’s second consecutive home defeat keeps them in fifth place but now they are ten points behind leaders Dempo.
Lajong have moved out of the drop zone but they could still end up there if Salgaocar beat East Bengal on Monday.
