Shillong Lajong have registered their fourth league win of the season by beating Pune FC 1-0 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong on Saturday afternoon.
The only goal of the game was scored by Seikhohao Tuboi in the second half.
Lajong came into this game lying in 13th spot and four points behind 12th placed Air India so they were determined to win this but were unable to create openings in the early stages.
The first real chance only came close to the 20 minute mark when Tuboi’s well taken volley narrowly missed the target.
Pune were struggling to create chances with defender K Rahul coming the closest with his powerful shot that went over the bar.
Lajong continued to dominate possession but were struggling to create clear cut opportunities while Pune were happy to go into the halftime break all square.
Even after the restart there was very little goal mouth action as both defences were on top and it was looking like that the game would finish in a goalless draw.
However it all changed in the 73rd minute when Tuboi headed home James Giblee’s well directed cross to give Lajong the lead much to the delight of the large home crowd that had gathered.
Pune had a go in the latter stages but could not find a way past a well organized Lajong defence and thus suffered their second consecutive defeat.
The result still keeps Stanley Rosario’s side in the drop zone but they are now only one point behind Air India and Salgaocar.
While Derrick Pereira’s team remain in sixth position but the gap between them and current leaders Dempo is now nine points.
