It was a dramatic goal-fest at Ewood Park, which saw as many as 5 goals being scored, a sending off, 9 yellow cards, and two penalties, as Liverpool grabbed a late goal win over relegation threatened Blackburn Rovers. Liverpool rested most of their main players, keeping in mind the FA Cup tie against Everton. Steven Gerrard, Stewart Downing and Jamie Carragher were rested, while Luis Suarez, Dirk Kuyt, and Jose Enrique were benched. This meant a return to the starting line-up for Andy Caroll, Maxi Rodriguez, Sebastian Coates, Craig Bellamy, Jay Spearing and Glen Johnson. Liverpool also replaced Pepe Reina with Alexander Doni.
Maxi Rodriguez celebrated his start with a quickfire double in 4 minutes, when he scored in the 12th and the 16th minute. In the 25th minute, Doni was sent off for bringing down Junior Hoilett in the box. Substitute keeper Bradley Jones came on, and The Reds had to sacrificed John Flanagan. But Blackburn missed the chance to come back into the match, when Aiyegbeni Yakubu’s penalty kick was saved by Jones. Yakubu did score though, from a header, off a David Dunn free kick.
The second half saw a flurry of yellow cards being shown, and in the 61st, Liverpool keeper Jones was booked for a push on Yakubu, and a second penalty was awarded to Blackburn. Yakubu made no mistake in his second attempt, and levelled the score at 2 all. Both sides pressed on for a winner, and it came very late into the game, from an Andy Caroll’s header in stoppage time, and gave Liverpool a narrow win, which will boost the team’s morale going into Saturday’s FA Cup tie.
