In what will probably be the first of its kind, a football academy was opened at Mairang, in Bynther on Saturday. This will be the first rural-based football academy in Meghalaya. Aptly named The Little Star Football Academy, the school will cater to youngsters aged between 12 and 16 years old of the region. The Academy has been set up by the management of Little Star School, Bynther, which was established in 1993.
Speaking on the occasion, the Academy’s President and Principal of the school, Mr.B.Marbaniang said that the objective of the Academy is to raise and uplift promising football stars from the region ,which have always had the potential to do so ,but failed due to a lack of opportunities .He also said that the Academy is in talks with various Coaches to train the wards, and added that he would welcome any form of assistance from the Government and Private institutions alike.
The Secretary of the Meghalaya Football Players Association(MFPA),Mr.S. Syiem inaugurated the Academy, and praised the initiative of the School, saying that it is high time that local footballers get the admiration and appreciation that other footballers from outside get.
