Manchester United strengthen their grip on the English Premier League title after defeating 10man Queens Park Rangers 2-0 at Old Trafford, and are now 8 points clear of their local rivals Manchester City.
QPR’s Captain Shaun Derry was dismissed after 14 minutes when Ashley Young was felt past in the penalty area. Rooney converted the spot kick for his 30th goal of the season.
Replays, however, suggested that the contact was minimal as Derry barely touched him and Young was offside.
Midfielder Paul Scholes sealed victory for United taking the score to 2-0 when he lashed the ball in from the edge of the box in the 68th minute.
Despite this defeat, QPR remained above the relegation zone while Manchester United is on a roll with 8 straight league wins. They now have six games remaining and are favourites to win the English Premier League title for a record 20th time.
