In what could probably be one of the biggest upsets in football history, Japan saw off reigning World and European Champions Spain by a solitary goal, in the men’s Olympic football tournament in Glasgow. Spain were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Inigo Martinez was sent off following a straight red. Yuki Otso got the winner in the 34th minute after tapping in from close range past keeper David De Gea.
In other results hosts Britain had to settle for a 1-1 draw against a resilient Senegal side, while Brazil survived a scare against Egypt, winning 3-2 with star striker Neymar on target for the Brazilians. Belarus, who are also in Group C with Brazil also registered a win over New Zealand, while in the Group B matches, Gabon drew 1-1 against Switzerland and Mexico settled for a goalless draw against South Korea.
The tournament is a unique experience with all teams fielding their Under-23 side, and 3 senior players allotted to every team.
