Real Madrid Centre back Pepe had arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle on Wednesday.
A statement on the club’s website read: “Pepe, after feeling discomfort in his right ankle and having a medical examination, had a consultation with Dr Van Dijk in Porto this morning.
“An ankle arthroscopy has been performed on the player.”
They did not say how long the Portuguese international would be out of action but local media reported that he would be sidelined for about a month.
Real Madrid have been hit by several injuries in defence in recent weeks, including fullbacks Fabio Coentrao and Marcelo.
