Portugal became the first team to advance to the semi-finals of Euro 2012 championship, as Portugal beat the Czech Republic 1-0 to reach the European Championship semi-final.
Ronaldo found the back of the net in the 79th minute, flying into Moutinho’s cross and delivering a header which bounced off the ground and past Cech — sending the Portugal fans, including greats Eusebio and Luis Figo into wild celebrations.
Both sides equally dominated the game, but failed to score despite several easy chances which could have given either team the lead. Portugal though had better ball possession, accounting for 62 percent of the total match possession and had 11 corner kicks, but three offside calls stopped their attack at various times. Their defense essentially saved them throughout as they limited the Czech’s to just two shots, with neither coming close to goal. The Czechs were never able to create much of an attack with just two shots in the entire 90 minutes, neither of them on target.
Portugal, the 2004 finalists, advanced to the semifinals for the fourth time following 1984, 2000 and 2004. Portugal will either play defending champions Spain or France in the semi-finals, who will face off on the 23rd of June, Saturday.
