Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has announced he will not be extending his contract at the Emirates Stadium.
The 28 year old made more than 250 appearances since joining from Dutch side Feyenoord in 2004 for a reported fee of about £3 million. He was named captain in 2011 after the departure of previous skipper Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona.
He said in his official website, “I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract”.
Arsenal later issued a short statement on their official website, “We have to respect Robin’s decision not to renew his contract”.
The Gunners recently signed German forward Lukas Podolski and French forward Olivier Giroud, perhaps as potential replacements for Van Persie.
