Shillong Lajong Football Club Under-20 I League Team-Profile
The Shillong Lajong Football Club Under-20 side which is currently taking part in the I-League Under-20 tournament, currently in progress in Kalyani, comprises of players who all are under the age of 18 or less.Yet they have proved to be a side to be reckoned with, regardless of which teams they have faced .From their Group stage matches, the team has won two and lost one ,and have qualified for the Final Phase of the tournament.It is nothing short of an astounding accomplishment for the team,having been pitted against much more older-aged opponents and emerging out victorious, without much ado. It is a young team,with a perfect blend of youth,with the passion of winning being the common thread which binds them together
The team is certainly the youngest in terms of age , with an average age of 17,but their performance on the field speaks volume of the talent and dedication that has been shaping the team,which is a shining light of encouragement for the Club’s Youth Development Program,with an aim of shaping the future of Football in the region.The team is truly a Gem which has been etched out and cut from the embers of the Program,and they are the Flagship model for others to follow.
Falling under the Youth Development Program of Shillong Lajong Football Club, this promising bunch of youngsters is ably led by Lalrinzuala , and it is noteworthy to mention that four players are part of the Under-17 National Camp ,which will be held later in Goa. These four are-Sandeep Singh,Nimdorjee Tamang,Shaiborlang Kharpan and captain Lalrinzuala.Nimdorjee Tamang is a new recruit from Sikkim and the lad has blended in well with the team.He was instrumental in giving his team the important lead in the win against East Bengal,playing provider for eventual scorer Shaiborlang Kharpan.
In the first match too, against Mohun Bagan Under-20,it was the Shillong Lajong boys who dominated play,but were unlucky to be denied on many occasions and were edged out by a solitary goal late in the game.In the last group game too,it was the Lajong young guns who dominated play,more so in the first half,and were rewarded with the winning goal in the 76th minute,with local lad Redeem Talang shooting his team into the final phase.All in all,the boys have dominated and played much better football than their older and much fancied opponents in the pitch.
They will now take on the other Group leaders in the Final phase of the competition,which would be held in Kalyani, and it would be another fine feather in this young team’s cap if they would go on and win the title.
