The Shillong Lajong colts displayed a performance which belied their age and gave a good account for themselves and quickly took the lead when Guidingstar found the back of the net in the 9th minute ,when he lashed a powerful shot past the Umlyngka keeper.
For the crowd which had thronged the FIFA turf, it was a joy to watch the tiny Lajong players weave a net around the Umlyngka backline, especially Freestar and Batskhem ,who played with maturity well beyond their age.
However, the physical aspect of Umlyngka came to the fore, when the team from Upper Shillong found the equaliser in added time of the first half, through Ferdinand Kharbuki.
The second half saw Umlyngka as the more dangerous and more likely to score. This then culminated in them taking the lead, when Banker Nongsiej scored off a throw in, in the 49th minute.
The young Reds then threw whatever they had at the Umlyngka side,as the equaliser seemed destined to come. It nearly did materialised at the fag end of the match when Freestar, who had an outstanding match unleashed a powerful left footer, but the Umlyngka custodian did well to keep out the goal.
The match then ended, going in favour of Umlyngka 2-1,and crowning them the Champions of the Under-14 Tournament.
The tenacity of the Shillong Lajong players though, had to be seen to be believed, as they had truly shown that the future of football in the region is in safe hands, going by the scintillating display of football exhibited by them.
