The Club added another feather in its cap, when it annexed the Meghalaya Invitation Cup in 1990, defeating the rival city champions, Nabjyoti FC,from Guwahati. The trend had indeed been reversed.
The 90’s were also a transitional period for the Club. At the helm, the reins were handed over to Shri Larsing Ming Sawyan, who was given the task of carrying on the Club’s Legacy, in the year 1999. The change in leadership did not have any negative impact on the team, as it jumped about from one milestone to the other. On the contrary ,it effected a change for the better. The Club only got better, with a much more stemmed infrastructure in place, and a better professional outlook.
THE MILLENIUM AND BEYOND (2000-present):
The millennium saw changes aplenty in the Club. With professional management came the appointment of coaches, managers, support staff and an overall better infrastructure. It was the beginning of yet another historic era for the Club.
On the turf, the Club established itself as one of the most dominant clubs of the region, along with other prominent teams like Mawlai FC, Langsning FC, and Ar Hima. And not just local teams-the Club also tasted success against erstwhile clubs from outside the State and the country too.
Another significant and note worthy development was the change of name, which took place in 2008. Lajong Sports Social and Cultural Club, the name which had for so many years epitomised and set the bar for footballing greatness and perfection was altered to Shillong Lajong Football Club. From the name itself, the sole objective of the club was to focus on football and football alone. But the club’s activities were not restricted to the field as such. It walked on yet another untrodden path-setting up of a Football Academy.
