Jalpaiguri based footballer, Mahesh Thapa, died on Sunday after collapsing on the field at Netaji Vidyapith, Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
Thapa, a player of Raikatpara Sports Association was injured after he collided with the opposing goalkeeper during the match.
Due to non availability of an ambulance on the ground, Mahesh Thapa, was taken to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital on a motorcycle but there were no beds available at the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) wing. He was then taken to a private nursing home but here were no beds available again and on the way to another hospital, he breathed his last.
It may be recalled that this is the third incident of an Indian footballer suffering a fatal casualty on the pitch,after Bruno Coutinho, who died, following a collision with a player and more recently Venkatesh,a Bangalore footballer who suffered a cardiac arrest on the field.
