Football icon, Baichung Bhutia witnessed one of the best moments in his life as his team, United Sikkim Football Club played a 1-1 draw against Kolkata’s Mohammedan Sporting in Gangtok on Tuesday and earned promotion to the I-League, the country’s premier football competition.
Earlier on Monday ONGC had booked their berth for the next edition of the I-League.
USFC had taken the lead in the 42’ when Daniel Bidemi converted from the spot. Mohammedan, however, equalised in the 59’ as striker Alfred Jaryan made it 1-1.
After getting the equaliser, Mohammedan dominated and attacked the Sikkim side, in search for a lead but the match ended in favour of Baichung Bhutia’s outfit. It was a case of being “so near and yet so far” for Mohammedan Sporting who were edged out by a single point.
Mohammedan Sporting finished on 21 points from 12 matches while USFC got 22 points from the same number of matches.
